So how do the vocabulary packets work?
Students will be given a new vocabulary packet (titled Master Words) every OTHER Friday, and they will be due the following Friday when they take a quiz over the words. At first we go over them together in class to help them get started, but after the first few packets, students will be expected to complete all parts on their own.
Grading: The vocabulary packet will count as a practice grade. Vocabulary quizzes will count as an assessment grade.
Please note that I can NOT email these packets home and I can not post them on the website due to copyright restrictions. If your child is absent or loses their packet, they will need to come see me for another copy as only "hard copies" are available. Thanks for understanding!
About Master Words:
Every other week, students will be doing Master Words. This will be a two page worksheet that will be a vocabulary builder. Each lesson begins with a story, essay, or poem, using the 10 words. Students will do six exercises using these words in higher level skills, and these words will be repeated in future lessons, so words in lesson one will show in lesson two, and words in lesson three will show up in lesson four, so students will use the words over and over in different settings, increasing their learning and comprehension. Master words focus on multiple meanings, synonyms, antonyms, and analogies which are all part of the TEKS, and will be used on the SAT and ACT. Some of these exercises can challenging, but most of the lessons will be good practice.
Exercise 1) Students read the article and should identify the masterwords following the directions on the work sheet, doing a self test.
Exercise 2) Next students will predict meanings of words and write those on line A. Next they will look up definitions from the dictionary, using context clues from the story to determine the meaning, if multiple definitions are given.
Exercise 3) Students will choose words from a word bank and match up synonyms and antonyms.
Exercise 4) Students will decide if the first pair of words are synonyms or antonyms, and then put the correct master word in the blank, finishing the analogy; ex hot is to cold as high is to low. Hot; cold:: high; low.
Exercise5) Students will pick the correct word to fill in the blank.
Exercise 6) This exercise will vary each week using the master words.
